Belgium’s largest urban transport network runs on two mobile applications. Together they serve nearly 400,000 monthly active users: route planning, real-time alerts, ticket purchase, and MOBIB card management – Belgium’s contactless smart card for public transport.
When STIB-MIVB commissioned an independent mobile app audit of both platforms, the goal was clear: build a solid, evidence-based foundation for future investment decisions.

Overview
The challenge: turning complexity into clarity
Both platforms had evolved over years of development: changing teams, shifting priorities, growing integration requirements. STIB-MIVB needed an independent view, where each platform stood. What realistic options for their evolution actually looked like.
We ran a simultaneous mobile app audit of the iOS and Android applications, applying a consistent methodology across both. The assessment drew on direct experience. Tapptic has delivered mobile products for transport operators including TEC and Brussels Airlines. That context shaped the analysis beyond the code itself.
The audit covered both platforms across six independent areas of assessment, each scored independently, each linked to specific findings and effort estimates: software architecture, code quality, security and resilience, test coverage, performance, and documentation.
Findings fell into severity categories, with effort estimates attached to every item. Together they formed a prioritised improvement roadmap covering both platforms.
In addition, the engagement produced governance and methodology recommendations. These gave STIB-MIVB a view not just of what to improve, but how to structure future development and review practices.

Three paths for the next stage of evolution
Tapptic modelled three paths forward. Each was assessed for effort, risk, and long-term development impact.
01 — CONTINUE
Build on the current architecture and development model, with targeted improvements where most needed. The lowest immediate level of intervention. As product scope expands, however, development constraints increase.
02 — EVOLVE
Address the highest-priority areas across both platforms. This path reduces risk, improves stability, and creates conditions for sustainable feature growth, without requiring a full rebuild.
03 — TRANSFORM
Move to a modernised architecture designed for longer-term evolution. The natural path when product scope is expanding significantly or a major UX overhaul is planned in parallel.

The outcome
STIB-MIVB moved from technical uncertainty to a structured, quantified view of both platforms and three credible paths forward. Findings were translated into business terms: prioritised risk, effort by scenario, and clear strategic options.
By combining technical depth with effort modelling and strategic framing, Tapptic helped turn a complex mobile landscape into a clear basis for decision-making.
