Veolia manages complex industrial infrastructure in Belgium. The primary scope of this project was to simplify and modernize maintenance procedures specifically for industrial boilers across various Veolia locations. By replacing a bulky, 300-page paper manual with intuitive Augmented Reality (AR) instructions, the new mobile application aimed to minimize human error and significantly boost field technicians’ efficiency.

Overview

The Challenge: From Static Manuals to Dynamic Operations

Veolia’s field technicians relied on heavy paper-based operational playbooks (draaiboek) to carry out complex boiler maintenance. During time-critical interventions, technicians had to constantly cross-reference paper instructions with the physical machinery.

 

Key challenges included:

 

  • Process inefficiency: Manual cross-referencing slowed down critical procedures.
  • Operational risk: Complex, multi-step procedures had to be executed with high precision under pressure.
  • Limited adaptability: Fixed paper workflows could not easily accommodate different operational scenarios.

The Solution

Spatial Guidance for Field Technicians

Tapptic developed an Augmented Reality mobile application using Unity, optimized for ARCore-compatible Android devices. The app brings maintenance instructions directly into the technician’s field of view.

 

  • Spatial Instructions: QR markers placed on the boilers serve as spatial anchors, placing digital instructions precisely over the physical components.
  • Contextual Interface: Visual callouts, highlights, and reference frames guide the technician’s focus, showing exactly where to look and what step to take next.
  • Adaptive Scenario Branching: Conditional flows adapt to real-time situations, allowing technicians to follow scenario-specific paths based on existing operational logic.

The Outcome

The solution transformed complex boiler maintenance into an interactive, context-aware workflow:

 

40% reduction in intervention time: Streamlined workflows significantly accelerated field operations.

 

Reduced risk of human error: Spatial guidance and conditional workflows made complex procedures easier and safer to execute under pressure.

 

All critical procedures in one interface: Consolidated multiple operational manuals into a single, intuitive mobile application.
